We formed ourselves as a result of a Forum organised by the Matthew Trust in the House of Lords in February 1996. More than 120 representatives of 86 agencies attended and agreed that the Federation should be formed. As many again wrote in with support after that meeting, and at our peak achieved 250 voting and associate members who in total represent more than 150,000 service users in the UK.
The Federation is incorporated as a Company limited by Guarantee (number 3236769) and is a registered Charity (number 1058342)

Peter Thompson of that Trust was our Founder and is sadly missed.
This Coalition is relatively inactive at present following its attempt to amend the Mental Capacity Bill before it became law in April 2005.
