"An Uphill Struggle" February 2001

survey by Mental Health Foundation

full report: http://www.ontheside.org/focus/fpovsur.htm

556 people responded to the survey. The section for demographic details of the questionnaire was optional and so not all respondents gave their names or personal information. Of those who did:

47% were unemployed ; 26% were involved in voluntary work; 15% were in employment; 13% were in education; 11% were retired.
Conclusion: unemployed 83% (but including voluntary work)

employed 15%

Ashley Goss Survey for East Berkshire Mind (2000) 100 known service users surveyed. 24% working including 18% voluntary

compared to national figure 19% (I have not seen figures this low before)

Conclusion:

employed 24%

worse than national averages for people with MH problems but sample suspect.

The following references are all in the Sainsbury report "Working it Out" (1996)
Pozner and Jones (1994) Salford Psychiatric Register of 6000 Salford residents in contact with District Psychiatric services during one year: only 22% were in employment whilst 53% were not working and not retired. (13% difference not reported) Conclusion:

employed 22%

Hill, Hardy and Shepherd (1996) MDF membership surveyed: only 31% in paid employment, and of those available for work 56% were unemployed Conclusion:

employed 31%

By our ESF project criteria people "not ready for work" are unemployed if our scheme could enable them to get ready for work

So unemployed certainly would be more than 56%.

Rogers, Pilgrim and Lacey (1993)

"People First" Survey

Only 20% of sample in employment (11% full time, 9% part time) Conclusion:

employed 20%

National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation research (1992) 85% unemployment rate Conclusion:

unemployed 85%
